O’Connell is a small, peaceful outer suburb of Gladstone, Queensland, situated approximately 10 km south of the city centre, within the Gladstone Region. It covers about 12.1 km² of land and recorded a population of 399 in the 2021 Census—up from 317 in 2016, reflecting nearly 26% growth.

Most residents in O’Connell are middle-aged or older, with the average age around 38–41. Household structures tend to be couples with children, and owner-occupation rates are high—around 82%. Cultural identity is predominantly Australian or English ancestry, with smaller proportions of Scottish, Irish, and German heritage.

Housing is mostly separate residences on large rural or semi-rural lots, reflecting the suburb’s zoning: about 59% rural, 25% open space, and a small portion designated for low-density residential use. The median resale house price was about $552,500 over the year to mid‑2025, representing 20% annual growth from roughly 10 homes sold at a median of 27 days on market. OnTheHouse data reports a slightly higher median house value of approximately $695,000 and median rent near $300 per week, with modest rental yields (~4.4%).

Transport options include local bus routes linking to Gladstone CBD, with most households relying on private vehicles (about 83% commuting by car, around 2.6% using bus or walking). The suburb borders the Bruce Highway, offering direct access by road to central Gladstone and coastal destinations. There is an abandoned rail siding, but no active station within O’Connell.

Families access education in nearby suburbs. There are no schools in O’Connell itself; school-age children attend nearby Kin Kora State School, Gladstone South State School (primary), and Toolooa State High School or Chanel College for secondary education. Childcare options are available in neighbouring suburbs, with several centres meeting the national quality standard.

Green spaces include local parks and access to waterways like South Trees Inlet—a public boat ramp and floating walkway provide recreational access to the estuary. The rural character of the suburb adds a leafy, open-space feel, ideal for those seeking a low-density lifestyle close to coastal parkland.

Crime rates are moderate but not elevated. In 2024, O’Connell recorded about 65 crimes per 1,000 residents—roughly 15 violent crimes and 25 property crimes per 1,000, translating to a 1 in 67 chance of violent crime and 1 in 40 for property crime. Comparatively, it ranks safer than about 77% of Australian suburbs and on par with many Queensland communities.

In summary, O’Connell offers a quiet, semi‑rural coastal setting with strong owner‑occupier stability, modest yet solid house price growth, and reasonable access to Gladstone’s services via car or bus. Its lifestyle suits families and retirees seeking a relaxed environment with low-density living, though parents should note the absence of local schools and amenities rely on nearby Gladstone suburbs.
