Lowood is a rural town and locality in the Somerset Region, located approximately 66 km west of Brisbane and 31 km north of Ipswich. As of the 2021 census, it had a population of around 4,082 people. It has become increasingly popular with those seeking a semi-rural lifestyle while remaining within commuting distance of larger urban centres.

Housing demand in Lowood has surged in recent years. The median house price is about $610,000, reflecting a 19% increase over the past year. Approximately 99 houses were sold within that period, with a median time on market of 24 days and a rental yield of 4.8%. Units have a median price of around $490,000, with capital growth of 28%, though fewer units are available. Median weekly rents for houses sit at around $520 (yielding 4.8%), while units rent for about $470 (yielding 4.2%).

The suburb supports a diverse demographic, including families, professionals, and retirees. The dominant age groups are children (0–9) and adults in their 40s. Around 37% of residents rent, with most living in detached homes. Median household income is modest—roughly $950 to $1,100 per week—and the vast majority of residents (97%) commute by car.

Crime rates in Lowood are moderate, with a total of approximately 82 incidents per 1,000 people—slightly below the Queensland average. The chance of experiencing violent crime is about 1 in 117, and property crime around 1 in 23.

Transport is mainly car-based, as there is no active train line directly servicing the suburb. However, bus services along the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail provide connections to Ipswich and surrounding areas.

Education in Lowood is served by Lowood State School for primary education and Lowood State High School for Years 7–12. The high school also functions as a designated community flood refuge.

Local amenities include a supermarket, medical and legal services, post office, aged care facilities, pubs, bowls and golf clubs, a library, SES and police stations, a hardware store, petrol stations, and various places of worship. Residents also enjoy outdoor activities near the Brisbane River, Lake Wivenhoe, and the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail.

Community feedback describes Lowood as a quiet, semi-rural, family-friendly area with a strong sense of community. While it may lack some of the vibrancy of nearby Fernvale, many appreciate its charm, affordability, and spacious surroundings.

In summary, Lowood offers solid capital and rental growth, good educational options, a relaxed country lifestyle, and reasonable access to urban centres. It’s well-suited for those looking for affordable semi-rural living, though its moderate crime rates and car dependence are important considerations.
