Silkstone is a small residential suburb in Ipswich, Queensland, located just 3 km east of Ipswich CBD and about 39 km southwest of Brisbane. Covering around 2 km², it had a population of approximately 3,830 in 2021, with most residents aged between 20 and 39.

Silkstone offers a blend of historic character and modern convenience. Tree-lined streets feature original Queenslander homes alongside newer builds, reflecting its rich heritage. The community feels tight-knit and family-oriented. Casual recreation centres around local parks like Silkstone Park and Jim Donald Parklands, perfect for picnics, playgrounds, and community events.

Shoppers enjoy quick access to Booval Fair Shopping Centre just north of Glebe Road, offering supermarkets, specialty shops, cafes, and medical services. A smaller precinct, Silkstone Village, has recently been upgraded, adding retail, dining, and community pods to support local needs.

Silkstone State School (Prep–Year 6) on Molloy Street is heritage-listed and well-regarded. For secondary education, families often turn to Bremer State High School or Ipswich Girls’ Grammar nearby.

The property market is strong and rising. The median house price is around $630,000–$650,000, up 17–25% over the past year, with homes selling in roughly 11–20 days. Around 78% of homes are standalone houses, with the rest made up of townhouses and units. Rental yields for houses are between 4.2% and 4.7%, with a median weekly rent of about $500–$520.

Silkstone skews young: most residents are in their 20s to 30s. Owner-occupiers represent 60–67% of households, with the rest renters; the suburb includes a mix of families and singles. Median weekly household income is roughly $950–$1,100, and mortgage repayments are typically between $1,000–$1,399 per month.

Connectivity is excellent. Booval train station nearby provides regular services into Ipswich and Brisbane, and bus routes run through the area. Most residents rely on cars, although public transport is a reliable option.

Crime is slightly above average. Property crime runs at about 61 incidents per 1,000 people and violent crime at roughly 5 per 1,000—placing Silkstone below the Greater Brisbane average but higher than many suburban peers. Most residents report feeling comfortable, with local feedback noting a quiet, family‑friendly neighbourhood and limited safety concerns.

In summary, Silkstone offers strong capital growth, solid rental yields, and a youthful, community-focused environment. It combines character homes, reliable transport, and local amenities with affordable housing in a well-connected Ipswich suburb. However, moderately higher crime rates and a reliance on nearby centers for major services are factors to weigh. This makes it particularly suitable for families, young professionals, and investors seeking value close to the Ipswich nucleus.
