Gilston is a semi-rural suburb in the Gold Coast hinterland, situated about 9 km southwest of Nerang and 17 km from Surfers Paradise. It covers around 9.5 km² and is home to approximately 2,669 people as of the 2021 Census. The suburb offers a tranquil, leafy atmosphere with large residential lots nestled among rolling hills and bushland.

Transport-wise, Gilston is conveniently placed near the M1 motorway, allowing easy access to Brisbane and surrounding areas, while the closest train station is in Nerang about 10 km away. Local bus routes provide links to neighbouring centres.

Young families are well catered for with Gilston State School (Prep–Year 6) located within the suburb, and secondary schooling is readily available at Nerang State High School.

Residents enjoy a nature-rich lifestyle, with numerous walking trails, proximity to Nerang National Park, and easy access to hinterland wineries and the nearby Hinze Dam for recreational activities like boating, fishing, and picnicking.

On the property front, Gilston’s house market has been buoyant. The median house price is approximately $1.265 million, up around 8.8% over the past year. Homes typically spend about 73 days on the market, with around 10 houses sold per month. Rental returns are solid, averaging a 4.4% yield, and the median rent is approximately $980 per week.

Gilston also ranks well on safety. Crime is recorded at about 30 crimes per 1,000 residents per year—a rate significantly lower than Queensland averages. The chance of being a victim of violent crime is about 1 in 267, while property crime stands at around 1 in 59. It ranks within the top third of safest suburbs on the Gold Coast by both violent and property crime metrics.

Community feedback is favorable: residents describe Gilston as a quiet, close-knit area that offers both rural tranquillity and convenient access to suburban amenities. Locals often highlight the country-land feel, friendly neighbours, and strong connectivity via the M1.

In summary, Gilston appeals to families, nature enthusiasts, and those seeking a semi-rural lifestyle with strong property growth, excellent school access, abundant green space, and a high standard of safety—all while remaining close to the urban conveniences of Nerang and the broader Gold Coast.
